Faux Painting Services offered by MHR:
Supplies needed:
- Wide brush
- Lint free roller or high density foam roller
- Flat paint - 3 different colors
- Natural sea sponges - 3 sizes
- Water based clear coat
- Scrap piece of cardboard
Step by Step Granitizing Instructions
Prepare the Surface:
- Prime surface first
- Apply flat black paint with brush or roller.
- Sand smooth with 320 grit sandpaper before proceeding to Step 1.
Step 1:
- Apply 1st color of paint with a large natural sea sponge.
- Dab into paint and then dab on scrap cardboard to remove excess paint.
- Apply until 75% of area is covered.
Step 2:
- Apply 2nd color of paint with a medium natural sea sponge.
- Dab into paint and then dab on scrap cardboard to remove excess paint.
- Apply until 50% of area is covered.
Step 3:
- Apply 3rd color of paint with a medium natural sea sponge.
- Dab into paint and then dab on scrap cardboard to remove excess paint.
- Apply until 25% of area is covered.
Repeat Steps 1-2-3:
- Apply all 3 colors of paint with a small natural sea sponge.
- Dab into paint and then dab on scrap cardboard to remove excess paint.
- Apply until 50% of area is covered.
Apply Clear Coat:
- Apply clearcoat with wide brush, lint free roller or high density foam roller .
- Apply clear coat in one direction to avoid air bubbles.
- Apply a minimum of 3 coats.
- Sand in between coats with 320 grit sandpaper
- Wipe with clean rag before applying each coat
- DO NOT use a tack cloth, this will ruin your final finish.
- Denatured alcohol on a lint free rag works best.
Granitizing can be done on any surface that accepts paint.

Granitizing Tips:
- Twist your wrist in different directions when applying paint with a sea sponge to ensure a random pattern
- Sand in between layers of paint to ensure a smooth finish
- Veining can be done with an artist brush for fine lines
- Overlap edges when applying paint with small sponges
- Use 000 finishing pad after last clear coat
- Applying paint in multiple layers will give your project depth
